Maluuba takes your privacy very seriously. So seriously in fact that we’ve put together a boring legal document that hopefully answers any questions you may have and puts your mind at ease!
There are a few exceptional circumstances in which we may share personal data with trusted third-parties for non-technical reasons, such as to comply with applicable laws or to protect the safety of users or the public.
If you have any questions regarding how we handle personal data, please feel free to get in touch with us by sending an email to email@example.com
- The information we collect and why we collect it.
- How we use that information.
- The choices available to you, including how to access, update and delete information.
Information we collect
We collect information to provide enhanced services to all of our users – from learning basic stuff such as your location, to more complex things like restaurants and events that you may find interesting to the people that matter most to you online.
We collect information in two ways:
Information you give us
Many of our services require you to sign up for a Maluuba application by using an external email account (for example, Gmail). When you provide a third-party email account such as a Gmail account, we may synchronize the contacts from the email account you provided to our servers for use with Maluuba. We may also synchronize calendar information from your calendars such as the default phone calendar and/or calendars associated with the email address you use to sign up for Maluuba so that your appointments may be viewed and interacted with through Maluuba. We collect personal information for technical purposes. For example, we may be able to improve speech recognition of voice queries (like contact names and song titles) by synchronizing contacts and song titles to one of our speech recognition servers. Under no circumstances do we sell personal data or provide personal data to non-trusted affiliates that have insufficient data protection practices.
Information we get from your use of our services. We may collect information about the services that you use and how you use them, like when you visit a website, play a song, or write a text message. This information includes:
We may collect device-specific information (such as your phone model, operating system type and version, and mobile network information). Maluuba may associate your device identifiers with your Maluuba Account.
When you use our services or view content provided by Maluuba, we may automatically collect and store certain information in our server logs. This may include details of how you used our service, such as your voice commands and results as well as bugs and crashes ( ahem… ). Information stored in logs may be used to troubleshoot possible errors and optimize the performance of our applications.
When you use a Maluuba service, we may collect and process information about your actual location, like GPS signals sent by a mobile device. This information may be used to provide you with more relevant content based on where you are located such as restaurants, movies, and businesses in your area.
Unique application numbers
Certain services include a unique application number. This number and information about your installation (for example, the operating system type and application version number) may be sent to Maluuba when you install or uninstall that service or when that service periodically contacts our servers, such as for automatic updates. Application numbers may also be used to maintain backwards compatibility of some application versions.
How we use information we collect
We use the information we collect to improve our existing services and develop new ones, and to protect Maluuba and our users. We may use this information to better understand the intent of our users when they utter voice commands (e.g. by improving our natural language processing technology).
We may combine information you give us from third-parties to improve your interaction with Maluuba services. For example, if you provide a Gmail account to sign up for a Maluuba service or use our social networking services, we may use information from these accounts, such as your name and the contacts associated with this account to offer a better experience with our services. We collect personal data for technical performance reasons. Specifically, we may synchronize your contacts from the email account you provide to our services so that you may perform voice commands in relation to these contacts, for example, emailing, calling and text messaging. Knowing your contacts allows us to correctly process your speech commands. Under no circumstances do we sell personal data or provide personal data to non-trusted affiliates that have insufficient data protection practices.
We may use your email address to inform you about our services, such as letting you know about upcoming changes or improvements.
We use device information to improve your user experience and the overall quality of our services. For example, by knowing your language preferences, we’ll be able to better process your voice commands.
Maluuba processes personal information on our servers in many countries around the world. We may process your personal information on a server located outside the country where you live. /p>
Transparency and choice
We understand that our users have various privacy concerns and comfort levels with certain practices. We want to be clear about what information we collect, so that you can make meaningful choices about how it is used. For example, you can
- Control who you share information with.
- Control the information you share with us.
- Take information out of some of our services.
- Disable your account or uninstall our applications.
Information you share
Many of our services let you share information with others. When you share information using Maluuba, it may be stored by Maluuba. Our services provide you with different options on sharing and removing your content. For example, you may choose to use Maluuba to post messages to Facebook by logging into the Facebook app when prompted, or you may choose to not give Maluuba such access.
Accessing, updating and deleting your personal information
We aim to provide you with access to your personal information. If that information is wrong, we strive to give you ways to update it quickly or to delete it – unless we have to keep that information for legitimate business or legal purposes. When updating your personal information, we may ask you to verify your identity before we can act on your request.
We may reject requests that are unreasonably repetitive, require disproportionate technical effort (for example, developing a new system or fundamentally changing an existing practice), risk the privacy of others, or would be extremely impractical.
Where we can provide information access and correction, we will do so for free, except where it would require a disproportionate effort. We aim to maintain our services in a manner that protects information from accidental or malicious destruction. Because of this, after you delete information from our services, we may not immediately delete residual copies from our backup systems.
If you stop using our applications for a period of time, we will delete any personal information that we have stored including your contacts. You may request earlier deletion by sending an email request to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Information we share
We do not share personal information with companies, organizations and individuals outside of Maluuba unless one of the following circumstances apply:
With your consent
We will share personal information with companies, organizations or individuals outside of Maluuba when we have your consent to do so. We require opt-in consent for the sharing of any sensitive personal information.
For external processing
For legal/safety reasons (exceptional circumstances)
We will share personal information with third-parties if we have a good-faith belief that access, use, preservation or disclosure of the information is reasonably necessary to comply with any applicable law, regulation or governmental request. We may share personal information with trusted parties in exceptional circumstances such as the detection or prevention of fraud, or to protect the safety of Maluuba, our users, or the public.
We work hard to protect Maluuba and our users from unauthorized access to or unauthorized alteration, disclosure or destruction of information we hold. In particular:
- We encrypt all of our services using SSL.
- We review our information collection, storage and processing practices, including physical security measures, to guard against unauthorized access to systems.
- We restrict access to personal information to Maluuba employees, contractors and agents who need to know that information in order to process it for us, and who are subject to strict contractual confidentiality obligations and may be disciplined or terminated if they fail to meet these obligations.
